What makes Independent Exploration different is not simply the information we can give you: it is the experience behind it.
We have travelled through different parts of China ourselves, explored regions beyond the standard routes and experienced the practical realities of travelling here.
That means we can help you make decisions that are difficult to capture in a standard guidebook: When is a destination worth the extra journey? Where should you slow down? When does a route look good on a map but become exhausting in reality? And where might there be something worth discovering beyond the obvious?
It is about knowing which places belong together, how much time they deserve, when a route becomes too ambitious, and where a less obvious detour can make the journey far more rewarding.

How Independent Exploration works
Independent Exploration is designed to evolve with your journey. You don’t need to decide everything from the beginning. Start with Journey Design, and once your itinerary has taken shape, you can choose to take it further with a personalised Travel Book.
Journey Design

This is where every Independent Exploration begins.
We start with a 30-minute consultation to understand your interests, travel style and what you are looking for. From there, we shape your journey, choosing the right destinations, finding the right rhythm and connecting the different regions.
You receive a first itinerary proposal, along with general advice on travelling in China and recommendations on how to connect the destinations in your route, whether by high-speed rail, flight or private local transfer.
Up to three rounds of revisions are included, with written communication for questions and clarifications throughout the planning process. The aim is to give your ideas a thoughtful structure while leaving the journey entirely in your hands.
Travel Book

Once your journey takes shape, go one step further.
The Travel Book turns your final itinerary into a personalised travel document, bringing together the different elements of your journey in one clear and carefully presented format. It includes a detailed day-by-day plan, accommodation suggestions, activities and experiences, together with more detailed transport recommendations and practical notes relevant to your route.
It is designed to give you a useful companion for preparing and travelling through China, while keeping the focus on the journey itself rather than turning it into a step-by-step guide.
The Travel Book is prepared once your itinerary has been finalised. It is designed as a personal planning document for your journey — not as a substitute for a guided tour or on-the-ground travel service.
If your plans take you further…
And if, along the way, you decide that you would rather have Ink Voyages arrange and accompany your journey, the planning fee is fully credited towards the final price of your private Ink Voyages journey. Because sometimes an idea begins as an independent adventure and becomes something we explore together.
