Your Journey
A journey from China’s urban giants to its remotest mountain enclaves. Experience the energy of two distinct metropolises, then venture into Naxi heritage, stone villages perched above the Jinsha River, and the sacred monasteries and farming valleys of Shangri-La.
On the Road Together
We love hosting departures because it turns every route into a shared story. Beyond managing the journey, we’re here as your companions, creating an easygoing atmosphere filled with spontaneous discoveries, shared laughs and great conversations.

Let the journey begin…
Shanghai unfolds through a landscape of striking contrasts, where ancient spiritual spaces like Jing’an Temple quietly anchor a soaring modern metropolis. Colonial-era façades along the iconic Bund gaze across the Huangpu River toward the futuristic towers of Lujiazui, offering an immediate sense of the city’s multi-layered identity and constant reinvention.
From historic streetscapes to grand waterfront boulevards, the day is dedicated to taking in the city’s unique scale and energy. In the evening, you can opt to join Matteo and Martina for an informal drink at a skyline bar, taking in a spectacular night view of the illuminated city to toast the start of the journey.
Note on Early Arrivals: For guests landing the day prior (Day 0), we can arrange your extra night and private airport transfer upon request, followed by a light welcome dinner in the evening.

A domestic flight (~3h) carries us into Chongqing, China’s legendary “Mountain City.” Perched strategically over the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers, Chongqing holds a rich historical legacy—from its ancient roots as the heart of the Ba Kingdom to its wartime role as the country’s provisional capital.
Today, this sprawling metropolis defies traditional urban layout, unfolding vertically through stacked overpasses, mid-air monorails, and steep cliffside stairways that echo its history as a rugged river port.
The afternoon is dedicated to immersing ourselves in the city’s extraordinary 8D topography and vibrant street life at an unhurried pace. As dusk falls, the steep riverbanks transform into a glowing cascade of neon reflections across the water, offering a captivating first look at one of Asia’s most visually dramatic urban landscapes.

Discover Chongqing, a city where urban spectacle and local traditions coexist. Wander through the quiet grounds of Luohan Temple beneath surrounding skyscrapers, explore old hillside lanes, and take in the city’s surreal geography—from the Liziba train disappearing into a residential tower to the dizzying elevated square of Kuixinglou.
The city’s character is just as vivid at the table. For lunch, step into a former air-raid shelter for Chongqing’s signature culinary ritual: a bubbling, fiery hotpot whose bold flavors reflect its rugged river-port heritage.
Cross the Yangtze aboard the historic cableway for sweeping views of the layered skyline before settling into a traditional tea house. Over local tea, observe a slower side of the city, enjoy a classic performance, and experience these enduring daily rituals.

A short domestic flight carries us into the high-altitude landscapes of Yunnan, arriving in the historic realm of Lijiang. Nestled beneath the snow-capped peak of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Dayan Old Town once flourished as a vital trading hub along the Ancient Tea Horse Road.
Guided by the hereditary Mu chieftains for centuries under the Ming and Qing dynasties, Lijiang developed a unique cultural synthesis—where indigenous Naxi traditions, Han architectural elegance, and Tibetan influences gracefully merged.
The afternoon is dedicated to exploring this living heritage starting at the regal Mufu Palace, the grand seat of the Mu rulers whose magnificent timber courtyards showcase masterworks of Naxi craftsmanship. Later, we wander along Dayan’s cobblestone lanes, crossing stone bridges over rushing canal streams as the highland sun begins to set.

We leave Lijiang to explore nearby Baisha, an ancient village that preserves the spiritual heart of the region. Here, we admire the famed Baisha Frescoes—a remarkable fusion of Buddhist, Taoist, and Dongba religious art painted centuries ago.
The morning offers an immersive encounter with living Dongba culture, the traditional shamanic heritage of the valley, featuring its unique pictographic script—the world’s only surviving hieroglyphic writing system still in active use.
In the afternoon, our journey continues deeper into Yunnan’s rugged wilderness as we drive toward Baoshan Stone Village. The route winds through dramatic mountain passes and descending valleys, revealing sweeping views of the Jinsha River before arriving at this extraordinary settlement built dramatically atop a massive natural boulder.

Perched on a sheer cliff high above the jade waters of the Jinsha River, Baoshan Stone Village is a living masterpiece carved entirely from a massive natural boulder. Founded in the late 13th century by an isolated branch of the Naxi minority, this extraordinary settlement was designed as an impregnable fortress.
Its narrow labyrinth of stone alleys, stairways, and cliffside houses can only be navigated on foot or by mule, offering a rare glimpse into a timeless way of mountain life.
The day invites us to explore this architectural marvel at an unhurried pace, with the option to embark on a breathtaking guided trek along a vertiginous cliffside trail. Accompanied by an expert guide, we follow an ancient path that cling to the gorge walls, revealing awe-inspiring vistas.
Leaving the Jinsha River canyons behind, our journey winds upward toward the high Tibetan plateau, stopping at the breathtaking travertine terraces of Baishuitai. Cascading down the mountainside like shimmering pools of frozen turquoise and white jade, these natural limestone formations are considered among China’s most striking geological wonders.
To the local Naxi, Baishuitai is deeply sacred—revered as the birthsite of Dongba spirituality, where the first shamanic ancestors derived their teachings from the pure, mineral-rich waters.
After taking time to explore the terraces and soak in the serene atmosphere of this ancient pilgrimage site, we continue our scenic drive as the landscape gradually shifts. Oak forests give way to vast alpine meadows, prayer flags fluttering in the mountain breeze, and distant snow-capped peaks, welcoming us into the legendary Tibetan realm of Shangri-La.

Leaving the valley behind, we embark on a rugged off-road journey deep into Shangri-La’s untouched wilderness. Traveling aboard hard-core four-wheel-drive vehicles, we ascend through ancient primeval forests, stream-fed meadows, and quiet alpine pastures where yaks graze against a backdrop of towering peaks. The tracks lead us beyond the reach of standard travel, climbing past remote high-mountain passes toward a sacred, cobalt-blue alpine lake cradled beneath snow-capped ridges over 4,200 meters above sea level.
Surrounded by raw mountain solitude, we pause to immerse ourselves in the ethereal scenery and enjoy a highland lunch featuring authentic local flavors, from warm butter tea and roasted barley to hearty mountain dishes. The day unfolds at an unhurried pace, blending pristine wilderness exploration with deep comfort before we descend back to Shangri-La.

Our day begins at Songzanlin Monastery, the magnificent spiritual heart of Yunnan’s Tibetan world. Often called the “Little Potala Palace,” this majestic complex rises above a serene alpine lake, its golden roofs catching the morning light. Within its sacred halls, resonant chants echo against intricate murals and flickering butter lamps, offering a profound window into living Tibetan Buddhist tradition.
In the afternoon, we transition from sacred architecture to pastoral serenity at a curated Tibetan farm. Setting out on foot, we follow an unhurried trail that winds through wide alpine meadows and traditional villages framed by distant peaks. As twilight falls, we return to the farm for a warm dinner celebrating highland flavors, before settling in for a magical night under the stars in our exclusive, comfortable tented lodge.

On the final morning, we arrange a private road transfer from Shangri-La back to Lijiang Airport (approx. 2.5–3 hours) in good time for your domestic connection. Here, guests board their flight back to Shanghai (~3.5h), concluding the travel services.
From the modern skyline of Shanghai and the dramatic urban canyons of Chongqing to the historic courtyards, sacred limestone terraces, and quiet mountain trails of Yunnan, this journey leaves us with lasting memories of rare landscapes, rich minority heritage, and authentic cultural encounters.
Safe travels home, and we look forward to welcoming you back for your next adventure in China.
